Despite the return of star striker Van Persie, Manchester United were dealt with a blow in the absence of England international Wayne Rooney.
David Moyes men lost their perfect record in the Champions League as Shakhtar fought out a 1-1 draw in their own back yard.
Here is how Manchester United players performed last night and their ratings.
De Gea – 7
A decent outing for the Spaniard but couldn’t have done much to stop the goal.
Evra – 5
Arguably one of the worst players on the pitch, conceded fouls and lost possession many a times.
Vidic – 8
The captain was in fantastic form against the Ukranian side. Rock solid at the back and provided much needed leadership.
Rafael – 6
The Brazilian faced some trouble defending the wing but overall did okay.
Smalling – 6
Partnered Vidic well in the center but surely needed his support and looked uncomfortable after the goal.
Carrick – 6
Distributed the ball well as usual but provided little or no input in the attack for the Red Devils.
Cleverly – 7
Returned to the starting 11 and looked as if he wanted to prove a point to the new manager. Impressive display by the youngster. Made crucial interceptions and helped in United’s offense.
Valencia – 6
Always tracked back and helped in defense but did not add much to his side’s attack when going forward.
Fellaini – 7
Perhaps his best game in the United shirt thus far. The new signing helped in breaking opponents play as well as provided firepower upfront.
Van Persie – 6
Quiet evening for the Netherlands star, not as sharp and prolific as the fans would have wanted but he has just returned to starting XI from injuries.
Welbeck – 7.5
Assisted poor Patrice Evra on the left side and Robin van Persie in the attack. Took his goal well.
Giggs – 6
Broke Raul’s all time Champions league appearances record after coming on for Fellaini. Did little to unsettle Shakhtar’s defense.
Jones – N/A
Injury time introduction.
