Madrid Dominate but Result Favors Manchester United

The much anticipated Champions League fixture between Real Madrid and Manchester United was played last night. Madrid dominated the proceedings for majority of the period but the end result favors United who somehow battled a 1-1 draw.
Mourinho’s men started the game in great style as they piled continuous pressure on United’s defense but could not take advantage of any of their opportunities. As expected, all the eyes were on former United player Cristiano Ronaldo, who was terrorizing the opposition with his pace and trickery.
Despite all their dominance, it was the English side that got the breakthrough. Against the run of play United got a corner and Madrid defense perhaps slept for some period as Danny Welbeck broke away from his marker and headed the ball in the net much to the delight of travelling supporters.
Having conceded an away goal, Los Blancos knew they had to come back strong and come back they did. Within minutes, Madrid equalized through Ronaldo, it was always going to be him. The Portuguese pounced onto a wonder cross as he jumped highest to head the ball past Spanish goalie David De Gea.
The second half was all about Madrid as well. United were more interested in keeping the scores level and their resilient defendse helped in that cause. Furthermore, the not so consistent De Gea was in unbelievable form as he made 8 saves, majority world class to stop Madrid from taking the lead.
United did get few chances on the break especially the golden one fell to Robin van Persie whose shot somehow beat the goalie but was weak enough for Xabi Alonso to get back in time and clear the ball. Rooney and van Persie were largely invisible during the game and could not help United much in attack. The Dutchman did struck the ball on target in the final minute but it was well saved.
Sir Alex Ferguson was without doubt happy amongst the two managers as United will take the crucial away goal to Old Trafford where they hold stronger cards. The second leg is surely expected to be as exuberant as the first because the fixture is still evenly poised. United may have the advantage but still they are far from favorites to qualify for the last eight.
