The champions Manchester city will be looking to bounce back after a horrendous Champions league campaign that kicked them out of Europe altogether. On the other hand, Manchester United, who are currently three points ahead of their rivals will look to extend the lead at the top. Soccerisma looks at the 5 key battles that can decide the Manchester Derby.
Carlos Tevez is always motivated coming up against his former team United. Evans will probably warm the bench after captain Vidic recovers but for now he has to deal with the menacing Argentine. United’s defense have been one of the weakest amongst the top teams this season. City have only conceded 11 goals in the league whereas United have let in no less than 21 goals, and Evans has to be on his toes to stop Tevez or else United will end up losing yet again.
This battle is more than intriguing one. Last season’s best striker and best defender come face to face. United have scored more goals than any team this season and Van Persie is one of the main reason for that. Once again the Dutchman is in top form with 10 goals already. Kompany has not been at his usual best, nevertheless, he is a class act. Can he stop the pace and killer instinct of van Persie, we shal see.
Ferdinand might have all the experience but is clearly past his prime. Aguero is one of the most feared strikers in the league, pacy, tricky and clinical finisher. The veteran defender has to stop Maradona’s son in law who will be clearly favorite to win this battle. Given United’s torrid defensive record, conceding seems likely but this time they are up against City so recovering from losing position will not be simple by any means.
Tom Cleverly is doubtful with a calf injury and Anderson is out with hamstring injury, this means 38 year old Paul Scholes will most likely start the game. Barry on the other hand is a regular starter. The battle is all about who will control the midfield. Even at this age, Scholes is impressive and has what it takes to control the midfield. However Barry will have the support of much effective Yaya Toure, who surely is better than the one beside Scholes i.e. Carrick.
City’s main concerns are in defense as both left backs Kolarov and Clichy were out with injuries. However Clichy has recovered from his ankle problem and is set to be back for the game. Not many attackers in the premier league can out pace or beat him in a one on one scenario but Antonio Valencia is one of them who can. Again, Valencia will also return from an injury (thigh) so the effectiveness and fitness of both the players will be tested on the day.
City dont lose at home and united defense is so crap that they dont stand a chance.
