Norwich City captain Grant Holt slammed England manager for his selection policy last week, labelling it ‘ridiculous’ that he has not get a call-up for his national side, along with others such as Danny Graham and Nathan Dyer of Swansea.
Holt has admitted to giving up on an England career as he believes he will never be selected to represent his country.
It is certainly an interesting point that the striker makes as his 15 goals on the Premier League surly put him in with a shout to prove what he could do, especially with friendly matches against Norway and Belgium before the European Championships.
However, none of Holt, Dyer or Graham were given a chance to play for the Three Lions, which must have put doubt into whether they would ever get the call from Hodgson
As the Three Lions get ready for their World Cup qualifier on Friday evening against San Marino, whose must famous player plies his trade in the Italian top flight – it begs the question, should they be given a chance in these kinds of games?
The experience would certainly be good for the players, but would it really be worth it? Say Holt came in to the side and started – anything less than a hat-trick would be deemed as a failure, so it is a bit of a no win situation. For a free bets that applies to that encounter, England winning 6-0 at 7/1 looks to be good value.
On the other hand, international goals are not something that comes easily, even against such poor opposition. When a chance comes for you at Wembley Stadium, on debut and you have the confidence and talent to slot it away, it says a lot about your character and how you deal with pressure.
Maybe the Canaries captain deserves his chance and he shouldn’t give up just yet, keep scoring goals in the Premier League and he cannot go unnoticed. The same applies to Rickie Lambert, who has had a very similar career to Holt.
After these two qualifiers is a friendly match against Sweden in November. That is the time for Hodgson to give fringe players and the un-capped their chance to shine. Unfortunately though, if you know about football bets, the odds of this happening are very slim.
Expect to see Andy Carroll, Danny Welbeck, Jermain Defoe and Wayne Rooney in the squad – four players who Hodgson knows so much about.
Does Grant Holt Deserve His Chance?
