FA Cup holders Chelsea have reportedly marked Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski as their prime striker target before the transfer deadline approaches next week. New Blues boss Maurizio Sarri has expressed a keen desire to pursue a new marksman as he is not entirely satisfied with the current options in hand.
According to The Star, the west London giants have highlighted Lewandowski as the leading target to bolster the frontline despite earlier being linked with Juventus’ Gonzalo Higuain.
Higuain has been touted for a reunion with Sarri over the past few weeks but the deal now appears unlikely to happen with the Argentine now on the verge of joining AC Milan on an initial loan agreement.
Lewandowski has been an outstanding performer for Bayern since joining them on a free from Borussia Dortmund four seasons ago and he has since netted at least 40 goals in three of those campaigns.
Nevertheless, the £139,000-a-week ace has presented doubts regarding his future after appointing super-agent Pini Zahavi as his new representative but Bayern, for now, are understood to have no plans of parting ways with the marksman.
Chelsea have been rather slow in the transfer market this summer with just one meaningful signing in the form of Jorginho but this has largely risen from their delay in signing Sarri as their new head coach.
Despite this, the 59-year-old has remained positive with regards to the proceedings at Stamford Bridge and the next few days may give an idea whether the Blues can persuade the Bavarian giants to part ways with Lewandowski.
Alvaro Morata, Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi are presently the senior centre-forward options available to the Blues but they could be at least one exit to facilitate the recruitment of a new frontman to lead the line.
