FA Cup holders Chelsea are reportedly monitoring the proceedings of midfielder Aaron Ramsey, who has been reluctant to extend his Arsenal deal. The Wales international has been with the Gunners for the past ten seasons but his future remains uncertain beyond the summer with his contract expiring in under 12 months’ time.
According to The Mail, the Blues are keeping a close eye on Ramsey’s contract situation and they could seek to pounce on his signature before the transfer deadline. Nonetheless, the midfielder won’t come on the cheap with the Gunners expected to demand at least £30m for his probable sale in the transfer window.
Ramsey has received a mixed opinion from the Gunners’ faithful over the past decade but there is not denying that he has been hugely involved in the club’s recent success. The Welshman bagged the match-winning in the 2014 FA Cup final which ended the Gunners’ nine-year trophy drought and he has since been able to replicate the showing in the 2017 edition where he headed in the winner against the Blues.
As a result, the midfielder has the characteristics of a box-to-box midfielder, who could evolve under the guidance of head coach Unai Emery and the next 10 days should give an indication whether the Welshman will commit his long-term future to the north London giants.
As things stand, Ramsey has yet to receive an extension on his current £110,000-a-week contract which is scheduled to expire in June 2019. There has not been any indication regarding his wage demands but he may be holding for a sizeable increase on his wages to put him on par with winter signings Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Ramsey joined the Gunners from Cardiff City during the summer of 2008 and he has since racked over 50 goals and 50 assists whilst appearing in over 300 matches across all competitions. He is presently the club’s all-time leading scorer from midfield surpassing the previous record set by Cesc Fabregas.
