Liverpool have announced the signing of highly-rated Brazilian midfielder Fabinho from AS Monaco for an undisclosed fee. The 24-year-old has become the Reds’ first capture of the summer transfer window and he is expected to join the club officially on July 1.
Fabinho has been a player who has attracted Premier League interest over the past couple of seasons and the approach from Jurgen Klopp’s side surely came as a surprise for the neutrals, considering Manchester United were widely tipped to acquire his signature.
Nonetheless, the Merseyside giants have landed a major coup with Fabinho’s versatility likely to strengthen them further ahead of a potential Premier League challenge next season.
Usually a central midfielder by trade, Fabinho has also plyed featured in the attacking midfield and right-back positions during his time at Monaco but Klopp could stick to the primary role with the Brazilian, given that has brought the best of his abilities.
Meanwhile, the arrival of Fabinho could witness the departure of Germany international Emre Can, who has seemingly refused to extend his Liverpool contract beyond the end of June.
The former Bayer Leverkusen man has been attracting interest from Juventus for a while and the Bianconeri could make a contract approach once his Bosman exit from Anfield is confirmed.
Liverpool finished a mammoth 25 points behind champions Manchester City during the recently concluded campaign but their performances against the Citizens was nevertheless impressive.
In the four occasions they met, Klopp’s men managed to outclass them in three of those and the Reds should not have a sense of optimism to challenge for the title, considering both Fabinho and Naby Keita have been brought to bolster the midfield.
Keita’s supposed move from RB Leipzig was finalised in an advance agreement last summer and the Guinea international is expected to join Fabinho at Anfield when the international transfer window reopens.
