Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that defensive duo Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo have regained full fitness ahead of Saturday’s afternoon kick-off against Swansea City.
Rojo has not featured for the Mancunian giants since their 2-0 triumph over Huddersfield on February 3 but he did participate for Argentina during the international break, where they were thumped 6-1 by Spain. On the contrary, Jones has had no competitive action since the disappointing 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United on February 11.
In a report covered by United’s official website, Mourinho said that the club have received a significant boost in the central defensive department with Jones and Rojo having completely recovered from hamstring and knee issues respectively.
However, there are still a couple of absentees in the form of Daley Blind and Sergio Romero. Blind had returned to training after his ankle problem, but Saturday’s game is likely to come too soon for the Netherlands international.
Romero, on the other hand, sustained a knee injury after a collision with Diego Costa on international duty, and Mourinho has confirmed that the goalkeeper will be out for a ‘few weeks’, hopefully to return in time for the FA Cup semi-final versus Tottenham Hotspur.
Aside from the pair, Ashley Young remains a concern after picking up a knock – playing for England versus Italy, but the manager has said that the 32-year-old has a chance of recovering for the weekend encounter.
Should this not be the case, Luke Shaw could earn a surprise reprieve for the Swans game despite being publicly criticised during the FA Cup quarter-final against Brighton. Matteo Darmian could be another option, but he too has fallen out-of-favour under the Portuguese tactician.
Manchester United are currently second in the Premier League standings with 65 points, but they could find themselves third before their fixture, should Liverpool celebrate a win over Crystal Palace in the early kick-off.
