Chelsea have been brilliant at the back under the management of Antonio Conte but reports suggest that the Blues want more reinforcements.
Reports in Italy claim that Chelsea are ready to sign Dutch international and Lazio star Stefan De Vrij.
According to reports (Lazio Press via Gazzetta Dello Sport), the 24-year-old central defender will be leaving the Italian club next summer and wants to move to England where the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United are in a battle to secure his services. Both Conte and Mourinho rate him very highly.
The Italian source claims that De Vrij was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford when Louis van Gaal was in charge of the club. Last month, reports suggested that the former Feyenoord defender is ready to leave Lazio to join Jose Mourinho at Man United (SW via Il Messaggero).
United splashed heavy cash to sign Eric Bailly last summer and Mourinho has more than a few quality central defenders in the squad. He is also interested in signing Roma star Kostas Manolas (via the Sun).
On the other hand, Chelsea boss Antonio Conte lured the likes of David Luiz and Marcos Alonso to Stamford Bridge last summer and the duo have performed brilliantly for the Blues this season.
The likes of John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic are past their best. Therefore, Conte must push to beat United and sign De Vrij who will largely strengthen his back line. This season, in 12 league appearances for the Serie A side, the Dutch star has scored 1 goal. As per the provided Lazio Press link, De Vrij is rated around 40 million euros ($42.5million).
