Liverpool have completed three free transfers in the form of Milner, Ings and Bogdan but they still need quality reinforcements.
The most important position they need to strengthen is the one left by their legendary star Steven Gerrard. No one can ever replace the former captain but Liverpool need a quality complete midfielder in the mix next season to challenge for top four or silverware.
In the current squad, arguably the most complete player is German international Emre Can. The former Bayern Munich star was mainly utilized in defense last season by Brendan Rodgers but his preferred position is midfield.
Can has always impressed for the German national U21 side playing a free role in midfield and is expected to play the same role for Liverpool next season. German U21 side coach claimed:
“I’ve just been to Liverpool, there we were told that Emre will soon assume Gerrard’s role in midfield,”
“Emre definitely has leadership qualities.”
Even Gerrard played in multiple positions during his time with Liverpool, he even played as a winger and full back and Can did the same with Leverkusen.
Strong in defense, Can will be an effective defensive midfielder if Reds plan to play him there since Henderson and Milner are also present for midfield roles. However, it is preferable that he plays further upfront because Kaiser has that drive in him and an eye for goal.
The idea of Can assuming Gerrard’s role makes sense but does that mean Liverpool will not be signing another complete midfielder Mateo Kovacic from Inter Milan who has been closely linked with the Reds.

Kovacic could still fill a role at LFC and a player that brings a lot of creativity to the side. A number 10 similar to Coutinho – someone who is irreplaceable if injured and Kovacic would give us that cover but could also play alongside too. Imagine this line up…
Mignolet
Clyne, Skrtel, Sakho, Milner (he played here for City)
Can, Henderson
Ibe, Kovacic, Coutinho
Sturridge
