Midfield has long been one of Manchester United’s biggest concerns since the retirement of legendary Paul Scholes.
Even Alex Ferguson could not find a perfect replacement for the former England star and brought him back from retirement in 2011-2012 season.
Perhaps, Ferguson did make one huge mistake by selling French international Paul Pogba to Juventus for peanuts and the youngster has proved to be class.
Pogba could have been the perfect replacement for Scholes but never got his chance because Fergie had Tom Cleverley in his mind as the man to emulate Scholes.
Cleverley was arguably the biggest flop in United’s midfield last season as a champions Red Devil side finished the league outside CL positions.
In came Louis van Gaal and soon Cleverley was loaned out to Aston Villa in the summer transfer window.
Now the reports suggest that Manchester United are to seal Cleverley sale to Aston Villa on a permanent basis for a fee of £7.5m.
Tom has impressed Paul Lambert and has worked well in Aston Villa’s midfield since moving to Villa Park from Old Trafford. Hence the manager wants the move to be made permanent in winter.
Meanwhile, United are still in search of quality midfielders with Dutch star Kevin Strootman topping the wish list this winter.
United’s six match winning run was halted by Villa yesterday as 10 men home side held on to a 1-1 draw.
