Manchester United’s main priority in the upcoming transfer window is to sign a solid central defender.
However, in the middle of the season, not many top quality stars are available in the market or are reluctant to move.
The Red Devils have no real choice but to find the best option and bring him in January to improve the vulnerable defense that has already cost United a lot this season.
Louis van Gaal’s main target in the summer was Mats Hummels of Borussia Dortmund but the German international opted to stay with the club to play Champions League football.
United do not offer any sort of European football this season and that is a negative that will remain this winter.
Nevertheless, Van Gaal has a quality option that can be bought in the form of Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar.
The Netherlands star was brilliant for the national side during the World Cup but for now sulks with struggling Villa side.
Vlaar’s contract will be expiring at the end of this season and it will be feasible for Villa to sell him for something now instead of letting him go for free next summer.
According to reports, Manchester United are closing in to secure Vlaar signing with a 6 million pound bid to bring him to Old Trafford.
Arsenal’s competition is there as well but Ron Vlaar will probably like to work with his compatriot Van Gaal and will likely start every game at United when fit.
At Arsenal, Koscielny and Mertesacker remain the starting central defense partnership when both are fit.
