There was one central defender Manchester United wanted really bad in the summer transfer window, a certain German international Mats Hummels.
However, the Borussia Dortmund skipper was happy with the option of staying for the time being while United could not bring world class quality to their central defense.
The only new signing playing as CB is Argentine Marcos Rojo who was more effective as left back for the national side during the World Cup and even Van Gaal started playing him on the left in the absence of Luke Shaw.
United still need a commanding center half and Hummels still remain their priority but it looks like Arsenal’s record move for the World Cup winner may shatter Manchester United’s hope of signing him.
According to reports, Arsenal have planned to offer a mammoth £32m offer, their record sum for a defender to sign Hummels from Borussia Dortmund next summer.
With more than a few German international already playing for gunners and arrival of another Kaiser in the form of Sami Khedira expected, Hummels might just be interested in a move to North London because of the German connection.
Surely United can offer him more wages than Arsenal but Mats made it clear that he is not after money and that may help the Gunners as well.
Lastly, a lot will depend on where the two teams finish this season, United are currently single point ahead of Arsenal and both teams are set to battle for the Champions league places.
