Manchester United boss drops transfer update on defender's future

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has hinted that Matteo Darmian could stay put at Old Trafford beyond the current transfer window. The Italy international was strongly linked with a return to the Serie A this summer but the move no longer remains a possibility with the Italian transfer window having come to a close.
Speaking in a press conference on Friday, Mourinho suggested that the Italian is likely to remain with the Red Devils beyond the summer with his suitors having failed to reach an agreement with the club.
During pre-season, Darmian personally admitted that he would fancying returning to his homeland in Italy but he may have to wait until the New Year for that happen, now that the Italian transfer deadline has passed.
Nonetheless, there are some positives for United with Darmian capable of slotting into both full-back positions and the Italian has already deputised for skipper Antonio Valencia during the opening Premier League game of the season.
Up next, United are scheduled to make the trip to the South Coast to take on Brighton & Hove Albion and it will be interesting to see whether Mourinho fancies Darmian with Ashley Young waiting on the wings after his World Cup break.
Young, 33, has been one of United’s most reliable defenders over the year and his performances have transformed him into a regular for club and country on the left side of the defence, though he may not be a long-term solution.
Aside from Darmian, Marcos Rojo has also been linked with a probable exit from Old Trafford this summer but his case could remain the same as he continues to struggle from a knock sustained on World Cup duty with Argentina.
Rojo is one of six high-profile players including Valencia and Nemanja Matic, who are presently receiving treatment for injuries sustained in either pre-season or at the World Cup in Russia.
