Manchester United have reportedly planned to reward Jesse Lingard with a bumper contract following his impressive showing for club and country over the past year. The 25-year-old had been regarded as a squad player at the start of the previous campaign but he managed to put in a string of impressive performances during the festive period to become one of Jose Mourinho’s favourites towards the backend of the season.
According to The Sun, the United hierarchy are understood to value Lingard highly and they are said to consider him as one, who can evolve into a global star for them in the future. As a result, they are prepared to present him with a fresh contract which would double his current salary of £75,000-a-week.
Nevertheless, the discussions are unlikely to occur until the conclusion of the World Cup considering England have surpassed their expectations to reach the semi-finals. Lingard has contributed a goal and an assist in the Three Lions’ progress to the last-four of the tournament and hopefully, he can end the campaign on a high by helping his country end their 52-year wait for the global crown.
Meanwhile, Manchester United have made meaningful business this summer with the arrivals of midfielder Fred and right-back Diogo Dalot from Shakhtar Donetsk and Porto respectively. However, they are yet to make a marquee signing during the ongoing transfer window and there is expectation from the club’s supporters that something big is planned before the deadline.
The right-wing and left-back positions have been regularly spoken about over the past month but so far, there have not been any additions. Willian from Chelsea has been earmarked as a possible candidate to bolster the right side of the attack whilst Juventus’ Alex Sandro has been long on United’s radar as they seek to replace the ageing Ashley Young in the backline.
