Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that the club are close to dishing out a new deal for midfielder Marouane Fellaini. The Belgium international came off the bench on Sunday afternoon to score the match-winning goal against Arsenal in the Premier League.
Fellaini’s future has been the topic of speculation over the past few months with his existing contract due to expire at the end of the campaign. As such, the likes of Besiktas and Paris Saint-Germain have been associated with a pre-contract agreement for his services, though Mourinho has now highlighted that the midfielder will remain at the club.
In an interview with BBC Sport, the Portuguese tactician revealed that United are ‘almost there‘ with the contract extension for the Belgian, though he refused to confirm Fellaini’s stay until the necessary paperwork is sorted out by the club’s hierarchy.
Fellaini has not always been a favourite among the United faithful but on Sunday afternoon, he managed to win over the supporters by scoring the match winner against Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal.
United were on paper favourites to win the game after the Gunners set out with a much-weakened side but they were made to work hard for the victory with Fellaini having to come off the bench to score a 91st-minute winner.
Despite his efforts, most of the supporters don’t believe that he warrants a regular starting spot owing to his reduced mobility in the centre of the park and the Belgian could be confined to a bench role irrespective of his proposed contract extension.
With the 2-1 triumph, Manchester United are now assured of a place in next season’s Champions League group stage and they are now in need of just two points from their remaining three matches in order to finish second for the Premier League campaign.
