Arsenal have reportedly entered the race to sign AS Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan at the end of the season. The Belgium international has long been linked with a Premier League move and the Gunners are contemplating over a probable approach during the summer.
According to The Sun, the north London outfit are favourites to appoint Luis Enrique as their next head coach and the Spaniard’s appointment could intensify their pursuit of Nainggolan.
The Belgium international will have turned 30 by the time the transfer window reopens but it appears that the Capital outfit are prepared to dispense with their age policy in order to build a title-winning squad.
Aside from Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea have also been associated with the former Cagliari man but the midfielder’s eagerness to play for an underperforming side could enhance the Gunners’ chances.
Nainggolan has failed to win any kind of silverware despite his progress with the Giallorossi and he has previously stressed that he would not want to join a ‘winning team’ where he cannot play to his full potential.
Nevertheless, the midfielder won’t come on the cheap for the Gunners and the hierarchy will have to sanction a deal of around £45m to pursue Nainggolan, whom Enrique is a big admirer of.
Prior to this, the Gunners need to complete the season on a positive note for Arsene Wenger who has announced his decision to end his long-term stay with the north London giants.
Arsenal are already out of contention for a top-four place in the Premier League but they can still find success in the Europa League where they are take on Atletico Madrid in a double-legged semi-final tie.
Diego Simeone’s side are obviously the favourites for the competition but Wenger will be aiming to guide the club to European success which would, in turn, assure them a spot in next season’s Champions League.
