The managers of Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have provided an injury update on their respective players ahead of Sunday’s London derby at Stamford Bridge. Both teams have another eight games remaining in the Premier League season, and the Blues, in particular, are in need of a victory this weekend in order to maintain their top-four ambitions.
Injury News:
Chelsea:
In a report covered by the club’s official website, Chelsea boss Antonio Conte confirmed that Ethan Ampadu has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after picking up an ankle fracture. Aside from the Welshman, David Luiz also remains on the sidelines for three weeks with a knee problem, whilst Thibaut Courtois and Andreas Christensen are potential doubts for the derby. Courtois and Christensen had to withdraw from the Belgium and Denmark squads during the break with hamstring and fatigue issues respectively, and they are expected to have fitness tests prior to Sunday’s game.
Tottenham Hotspur:
On the opposition side, Tottenham Hotspur coach Mauricio Pochettino revealed that Harry Kane has been progressing well since damaging his lateral ligaments in his right ankle. The Englishman is expected to be monitored in the coming days, and may make a somewhat miraculous comeback for the cross-town derby. Meanwhile, the other Harry in Winks, remains sidelined with a similar ankle problem, and he is definitely ruled out for the Premier League outing in west London.
Prediction:
Spurs have struggled on their trips to Stamford Bridge over the years, and their last victory against the Blues came before the Premier League era. Without Kane, Pochettino’s side may struggle on the road, but they would still want to come up with a point at the least in order to maintain their five-point advantage over the Blues – for the final Champions League spot.
