Jose Mourinho was impressed with the performance of experienced duo Ashley Young and Marouane Fellaini following Manchester United’s 3-0 triumph over FC Basel in the Champions League opener.
Young, 32, started his first United game in four months after overcoming a groin injury which he sustained in the Europa League semi-final against Celta Vigo last season.
The England international provided the assist for Marouane Fellaini’s opener in the first period and featured for the full 90 minutes, but Mourinho was not startled by the showing.
“Young was impressive but not a surprise,” Mourinho said in a news conference (via ESPN). ”

Meanwhile, Fellaini produced a game-changing performance while coming off the bench as he provided a goal and assist on Tuesday night. The Belgian has excelled as a ‘Super Sub’ since the European Super Cup defeat to Real Madrid last month, and Mourinho insists that the midfielder has not put a foot wrong since the 1-1 draw against Everton last term, where he gave a reckless penalty.
“To remember a Fellaini bad performance I have to go back to last season. But in the beginnings, and it was not even a bad performance, it was a naive mistake when he made a penalty in the last minute at Goodison Park. Apart from that, Fellaini contributions to my team are always positive, when he starts, when he’s on the bench. He’s very important,” he added. (via MEN)
United’s focus will now shift to the Premier League game against Everton on Sunday where they will have to cope without the presence of star midfielder Paul Pogba, who suffered an injury against the Swiss side.
