Manchetser United have Moved to Meet $47million Release Clause

Manchester United have been interested in Spanish international and Barcelona midfielder Sergi Roberto lately and the latest reports are somewhat confusing.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Manchester United have made an offer of 40 million euros ($47million) to sign the versatile star, who mainly played as a right back in the last campaign.
However, the Spanish source have mentioned that Barca’s message is that the La Roja star is not for sale at all. Roberto also wants to stay with the Catalan giants but anything can happen.

The confusing part is that if United have actually made an offer worth 40 million euros then they have basically activated the release clause in Sergi’s contract. Back in 2014, he signed a new deal with Barca and the club themselves confirmed “The release clause has been set at 30 million euros, which could rise to 40 million”
In such a scenario, Barcelona cannot really reject the bid and can only stop Sergi from joining United by convincing him to stay. The Catalan giants were helpless when PSG met Neymar’s release clause and could not even convince the Brazilian to stay.
So, how can Mundo Deportivo claim that United’s initial offer of 40 million euros has been rejected? The report also states that Chelsea are interested in signing him as well.
As far as Barca’s midfield is concerned, Roberto is 7th in the pecking order behind the likes of Rakitic, Iniesta, Busquets, Gomes, Rafinha and Suarez. Now that the Spanish club have also signed a new RB in the form of Semedo, it would be better for Sergi to leave the Nou Camp for regular first team football.
