Liverpool were linked with more than a few playmakers in this summer transfer window and then ended up signing Mohamed Salah from AS Roma.
Back in June, there were reports in the media (via A Bola) claiming that the Merseysiders are ready to sign Portuguese international and Sporting CP star Gelson Martins.
Yesterday, O Jogo (image provided below) came up with a report in which they mentioned Liverpool’s approach for the 22-year-old winger, who was in top form for the Primeira Liga side.

O Jogo have mentioned that Martins has been scouted by big teams like Barca, Juventus and Real Madrid but the Portuguese source claim that Liverpool were the ones who approached and inquired about the attacker.
It is stated that the Reds wanted to know about the price of the player and Sporting informally told them that they want 60 million euros (£54million) i.e. the release clause in his current contract.
Now that the new season is going to start soon, O Jogo claim that Sporting have Martins in their plans and are not going to sell. In the last campaign, Gelson featured in 32 league games for Sporting, scored 6 goals and provided 14 assists.
