If reports in France are anything to go by then Liverpool have received a potential boost in the race to sign the 22-year-old defender.
According to French source L’Equipe, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea have been in the race to sign Mendy and the Sky Blues were the front runners. However, talks with the Citizens have stalled over the huge asking price of 40 million pounds ($51million) and the Reds and the Blues can take advantage.
The former Marseille fullback was influential in Monaco’s title winning campaign. In 39 appearances (all competitions), the Les Bleus defender managed to score 1 goal and provided no fewer than 11 assists.

Liverpool signed two central defenders last summer and a new goalie but still their defense proved to be inconsistent last season.
Klopp needs to splash the cash and reinforce his back line in this summer’s transfer window. He must sign a top center half and a reliable left back as well.
In the last campaign, the German manager used James Milner, a natural midfielder, in the LB position and he did quite well. However a natural fullback must be lured and someone like Mendy would be a fantastic signing.
In your opinion, should Klopp spend $51million to sign Benjamin Mendy?

Mendy would be a great Buy at LB But we shouldn’t be in this position as I though we should have won the battle for Matip’ s former team mate Kolasinac who was available on a free and also a great LB but who ever we buy please he needs to have both plenty of pace and who can defend and provide crosses into the box but there are still a few Decent LB’s available…So there is Mendy, Theo Hernandez, RYAN BERTRAND, JETRO WILLEMS,
JOSE GAYA, SERGIO ESCUDERO and finally FAOUZI GHOULAM so plenty to choose from and all would be an automatic to start at LB from day 1 .
I’m drooling just at the thought of getting Aubameyang and Salah and the prospect of Mendy is pretty appealing, I must admit, but we seem to, once again, be ignoring the fact that we need a central defender and a defensive midfielder. Can’t remember the last time I felt confident when a team attacked us – perhaps Hansen and Lawrenson played, protected by Souness – so we need to strengthen central defence or we’ll be conceding goals for fun again, just like last year!
Another overly inflated price tag … good defender yes, price NO.
As always any half-decent players commands another ridiculous sum of money. NOIOOOOOOO!
