Liverpool signed two central defenders in the summer transfer window in the form of Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan.
Still, the Reds have consistently leaked goals and Sky Sports expert Tony Cottee thinks that Liverpool should sign Southampton star Virgil van Dijk to solve the dilemma (Daily Star). He claimed:
“I think a center-half like Van Dijk – if they can get him – will be a huge signing for Liverpool.”
“The way they play, it leads to them needing a strong back four and two strong centre-halves. If you’re going to play a pressing game and push forward, which is what he wants, he needs reliable defenders”
The 25-year-old former Celtic star has been in top form for the Saints and manager Claude Puel wants to keep him. Southampton have slapped a price tag of 60 million pounds ($73million) on him (Telegraph).
The Dutch international leads the back line with command, he is 6 ft 3 with a high leap that not only helps the team in the defense but also in the attack. In 27 games this season, Virgil has scored 4 goals.
Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino rates him very highly and recently claimed (The Times):
“Whichever club signs him will be getting a machine who can help to sustain a title challenge.”
As featured on the site, the likes of Matip and Klavan have performed well and Liverpool do not really need another central defender. Instead, Klopp must sign a specialist holding midfielder to sort out the defensive conundrum.
In your opinion, do Liverpool need Virgil van Dijk?
Van Dijk is a talented player for sure, but as good as he is he is not worth that kind of money. I can understand Southampton slapping that much of a fee on him trying to ward off suitors. If they are intent on sticking with that figure, Liverpool just need to walk away. There are other players in the pot!
Sakho and £10m for Van Dijk would be good business .
