Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho wants to reinforce his back line in the winter transfer window and more than a few top class defenders are linked.
The Red Devils have already agreed the terms and the fee (via Portuguese media) to lure Victor Lindelof from Benfica. It will not be a surprise if the move is announced very soon.
However, the Swedish international is not the only center half that Mourinho wants. Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk has been in the limelight as well.
The Dutch star has been brilliant for the Saints this season and has attracted interest from top European clubs.
Southampton are well aware of that interest and have slapped a mammoth price tag of 60 million pounds ($74million) to somehow ward off the suitors (The Telegraph).
Recent reports have suggested that United want to lure French attacker Antoine Griezmann for the above mentioned price (via The Sun).
According to former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino, the Blues and Man United are interested in signing the 25-year-old center half and the Red Devils might be very eager to lure him.
Tony told The Times:
“I feel United might be the keenest to acquire him, with José Mourinho deeming him a perfect fit. He could form an effective partnership with any one of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly or Marcos Rojo. Whichever club signs him will be getting a machine who can help to sustain a title challenge.”
The former Celtic defender has formed a solid central defensive partnership with European Champion Jose Fonte. Van Dijk has featured in 24 games for the Saints this season and scored 2 goals.
Only a world class striker is needed to partner Martial and Mhkitaryan upfront and it feels like Antoine is the one
