Tottenham led Arsenal in the Premier League for the major part of last season but in the end the Gunners finished above their arch rivals yet again.
Pochettino’s men achieved their main objective of qualifying for the Champions League and now the former Southampton boss must reinforce his squad with quality players to challenge the best of teams in the continent next season.
However, it will be fair to say that Tottenham are only signing bench warmers this summer while Arsenal are looking for proven quality players.
Arsenal have already lured a top midfielder in the form of Granit Xhaka. Moreover, reports suggest that star striker Gonzalo Higuain will almost certainly move to the Emirates as well.
As far as Tottenham are concerned, Pochettino has signed a strong defensive midfielder in the form of Victor Wanyama, however Eric Dier is his first choice DM who played brilliantly last season. Moreover, Dembele played a key role for the North Londoners as well, hence, it will not come as any surprise if the Kenyan mainly starts on the bench.
On the other hand, Spurs have lured Dutch international Vincent Janssen who scored 27 league goals for AZ Alkmaar last season.
The Argentine boss mainly prefers the lone striker 4-2-3-1 formation and Harry Kane will surely be leading the line for Spurs next season. Janssen is mainly a cover striker and may find himself starting on the bench more often than not.
Spurs are also linked with Wijnaldum and Tello but the duo are not better than the first choice attacking midfielders Eriksen, Alli and Lamela.
Tottenham are improving the depth of their squad but in all fairness, they need proven quality players for the first team to have any chance of winning the PL title next season.
Tottenham are Only Signing Bench Warmers – Arsenal Delighted

Tottenhams dropped points last season mainly came when Dembele or Alli weren’t in midfield and the likes of Mason and Caroll had to play. Wanyama means these two won’t be relied upon as much. Kane can’t play every game and added competition may take his game to the next level, like it did with Walker and Rose.
Unbelievably, these managers who are paid millions every year do actually seem to have a method in their approach! Buying bench warmers…yeah, it’s that simple.
Xhaka looked poor in the Euro’s
You didnt watch the euro then you keep calm and dont post unreliable fact,he played 4 games and won man of the match 3 times with the most completed pass of the group stage, till they exited the competition he was the player with the most completed pass.poor euro,s my foot.
Missed the important penalty against Poland?
And was utter turd against Romania….
But yeah. Good showing.
There is no such thing as ‘proven quality’ unless the player has premiership experience.
Spurs have learned the hard way that buying any old carlos kickaball who ‘did it’ in Argentina or Portugal doesn’t guarantee he’ll succeed in England.
Spurs will finish in the top 3 again this season. Their rivals are all in transition.
That’s a beautiful position to be in, which Arsenal would know nothing about . lol
The fact they are, in your words, benchwarmers means we are quality in the 1st team squad. If a player like Jansen ( top scorer in the Dutch league and huge talent with enormous potential ) is a benchwarmer – I’m hugely confident for the coming season.
Sad the Arsenal’s whole season was coming above us.
Head back to Woolwich.
I think you are stuck in a time zone. Liverpool won the league in the eighties using only fourteen players. That can’t happen anymore, it is a squad game and Tottenham are adding quality to the squad.
Our first eleven will also be much stronger from the experience of last season. Arsenal have got a squad full of so called big names, think they we missing when the title was available last season. Arsenal need a new mentality more than players.
Exactly!
The youngest squad in the BPL can be expected to improve for the further year of maturity, the year of experience and cohesion. Players like Son and N’Jie should offer more for the same reason, as should the genuinely exciting talent moving up from the youth set-up. The two major holes covered by none of these have been filled with Wanyama and Janssen – and in Wanyama’s case, at least, we have a BPL proven player who has played under the manager. On top of which, the young manager has had another year to learn and he, and the club, have another year’s stability.
Besides, an argument could be made that the first four games and the last four games were not truly representative of what the squad was/is capable of, for various reasons. So, er, yeah, ‘just’ signed bench-warmers, indeed…LoL ?
How many Arsenal players would actually get in a spurs team ? Answer probably one and that’s Sanchez and his fat Arse would be on the bench
hahaahahhaa – best joke ive heard all morning. keep it up
Spurs season was marred by a slow beginning and an almost spectacular unraveling in the last month. During the period from September through most of April they were simply the best in the league. The issues that require addressing are mental toughness and depth. A year’s experience and the steel and commitment of Wanyama deals with the former, while Janssen and hopefully only two more purchases of that quality will take care of the latter.
Arsenal may well smile, but they have to be fully aware that they found themselves in second not because of anything they did, but because the substantially superior team above them imploded.
Bench Warmers? Really? Like Seriously? It’s about improving the squad and trying to stop an over reliance on certain players. It’s also about bringing more competition to the squad,- subconsciously pushing the starting 11 even harder knowing that there are players who are waiting to take their place if they have a bad game. It’s about rotating your players so that you can compete in all competitions without deplementing the style you play. We have signed the top scorer in the Dutch league- same league that created the likes of Ibra and Suarez and we have also signed a premier league proven quality defensive midfielder, something that at this moment Xhaka is not considering he hasn’t played a single minute in the premier league- as with any foreign signing, there is no guarantee that they will be able to cut it in this league. Poch has built the foundations- we unlike Arsenla know our first team- we just need peices to complement the squad which we are doing a very good job of at the moment. Our team will improve- they are all a year older and considering we were the youngest team in the league, last seasons experience will only improve and better the team. Arsenal can go and buy this one and that one- we hear the same thing every season- they brought Ozil, Sanchez- what’s really changed? The only way Arsenal will really improve is getting rid of Wenger and they do not look like doing that any time soon which is all good for their mates down the road!
Spurs have a solid first team, superb youth players coming through, a young developing squad that think act and play as a team. They have players that needed some premiership experience I.e. Son, N’jie and who will be better this year having a year learning about the English game. Our entire philosophy is built on the future from Chairman down the line and Poch is not afraid to get rid of players that will not make the grade unlike the Arse who continue to mess players about, playing them, dropping them, benching them. Walcott, the Ox, good players messed about because the Arse fans want big names. As a Spurs fan of 55 years, I am happier now than I have been since the ’60’s. Oh and we get to watch them in the best stadium in London, not a library or an athletics stadium. How great is that?
Signing “benchwarmers”? – what complete bollox. Any player joining the Spurs squad will have a battle-royal on their hands to get in the starting 11. That’s just a fact. COYS!
I just hope we sign two more ” benchwarmers” of similar quality then the rest of the Prem can play catch up.
COYS
I’m struggling to grasp your point with this article? Arsenal are buying ‘proven stars’… yeah on the continent… not the PL.
Tottenham already have a first TEAM of stars…. all we need now is competition in depth, which what is being implemented, and superbly so.
Nice try, trying to convice yourself and others that Arsenal’s mediocre window is being successful.
I’m proud of what we have and what we brought in…. can the moaning bunch of arses down the road say the same?! They’ll probably try convince themselves their happy…. but truly… their not.
COYS!!!!!
Mind the grammar mistakes. 😐
The main problem with Arsenal is the “fans”. Look what Wenger has done for you in his time as manager, titles, cups, regular qualification for the CL, and all you lot are doing is to call for his head. You need to realise just how influential a good manager is. ManU fans have found out since old red nose retired! Be careful what you wish for and spend a bit more time looking at your own club instead of trying to put your neighbours down.
So gradually the gooners are increasing taking notice of us. they read everything we are doing. that’s some improvement for spurs. indeed top top quality we wish but how about economic Prudence in the face of building a new stadium. Wenger knows that but u guys are pushing him to go the expensive way. please arsenal you are no Man. Utd, Man. City or Chelski. you are just gooners.
I am Arsenal fan and I dont reckon Wanyama is a bench warmer. I actually think he is more solid than Dier. So far Spurs have had a better transfer window than Arsenal. Wenger is busy being himself; indecisive and toothless as ever.He is the reason Arsenal are always at a standstill. I dont think we will end up getting Higuain.
The writer is as clueless as his article reflects. What he forgets is that the ‘Philosophy’ nowadays at Spurs is Buy Young, develop, finish in the top 4 if not win the league, have a team ready in 2 years time to take us into the new stadium. It’s a long term plan not a quick fix of the likes of Huguaine who Arsene is trying to sign for £78M plus to get the monkey of Arsenal fans And Spurs threat off his back.
He once (AW) said that he would never pay stupid money for a player but trying to pay £78M for a player on the wrong side of his career is a joke. He used to buy young players and develop them but now he ain’t got a clue what he needs to do.
‘Buy bench warmers?’ Yes we will see about that when we have CL, FA, Premier League, league cup to contend with.
Pochettino is building a team, a team in the same mould as Leicester, but with more skill and ability to play open football, as he says ‘you sign for Tottenham to train, not to play’ when he has the players who do what he wants ie:his ‘philosophy’ then the judgements you make can be applied.
We know what the German supporters say about Ozil. he disappears to often in the big games and that Sanchez has already stated that he is up for a move, this as Wenger knows can cause havoc with team planning and in the past he has said he would not pay ‘stupid money’ for players, it appears he has changed his mind and is now getting the very problems he spoke of.
Whistling past the graveyard. Spurs have a settled and young squad and now they have cover for the two key positions. Arsenal are as usual rebuilding and how long before Willshere is back in the orthopaedic ward?
Colin, Harrow
It is a fact that we were unbeaten in all competitions last season when our first choice eleven started. Recruitment in recent seasons had been more about increasing squad depth, with Alli and Dier proving the wisdom of giving opportunity to young talent. What we lacked last season however were squad players capable of giving genuine competition for a starting place. Hopefully the likes of Janssen and Wanayama, and ideally perhaps 3 more will provide this. Overall an excellent season last time round, and with even luck we would have finished above Leicester. For all that it was Arsenal who had the league on a plate but threw it away, so with that in mind can’t be too unhappy with the final outcome.
