In the past few seasons, Manchester United have signed more than a few defenders to reinforce their back line.
The likes of Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian arrived under the management of former boss Louis van Gaal.
This summer, under new boss Mourinho, United have already completed the signing of a young center back in the form of Eric Bailly from Villareal (Jose’s first signing). The Red Devils agreed a fee of €35m + further €5m in bonuses to sign the Ivorian international from the Spanish side (Daily Record).
As per the provided Daily Record link, the Portuguese manager is ready to further reinforce his central defense by signing an experienced star.
United suffered a 4-1 defeat against Dortmund recently and perhaps that result has pushed Mourinho to think about signing another center half.
The Old Trafford club already have players like Smalling, Bailly, Blind, Jones and other youngsters for the central defensive positions. Moreover, the Red Devils had the best defense in the Premier League last season (conceded only 35 goals). Therefore, Mourinho really does not need to sign another center back this summer.

Blind is too slow and doesn’t have the ability to boss the opposition’s forwards i.e.. he’s not a Steve Bruce! Jones gets injured too often and so cannot be relied on. Smalling is good but not great and Bailly may yet prove to be an inspired buy – the jury is still out!In any case Darmian is not a defender and Valencias is basically a converted winger. So you might need anothe centre back in order to play 3 at the back and 2 roaming wing backs. What happens if Smalling gets injured?
they won’t be playing 3 at back but yeah they need a CB and Darmian is RB LB not CB agree with the assessment of the rest though
For the reasons previously discussed, we do need at least one more defender. This defender needs to be a seasoned Premier League defender, someone who can be relied on to slot in straight away and not someone foreign to the league. We could do a lot worse that Williams @ Swansea. He has the experience and smarts to slot in immediately and would definately be excellent cover as a shot tern option. We could then groom McNair for another year or so and then slot him in. Not an ideal scenario but not the worst either.
Yes. I do really hope that Mcnair will be given more chances to prove himself. As what I know, he has the potential to be one of the greatest. Same goes to Mensah and Jackson, great potential.
Darmian isn’t even supposed to be at man utd. He’s a mediocre defender…we can do with valencia for a while as he has a good fitness record..I do agree with more defensive buys.
I do feel like suffocating when see the club of my life loosing. De Gea, Smalling, Rojo, Valencia and Rooney are the key players to say. The team needs an aggressive striker like Griezman to join Martial and Zlatan. Hope this season gona be on our side, let’s live hoping!
Regarding Blind he was converted to CB. I consider him a midfielder as you will note with his forage upfront and passing accuracy. Yes we need a RB just that we have youngsters to groom; Fousuh, McNair, etc but can do with Valencia. I agree not sure about Darmien if RB is infact his position.
it is true that it will be a gamble to play with blind, as we had seen during the previous season. He has not been able to take control of situation and ball. Today we need defenders to be using their head and also to be visionaries, which is not so with blind. Valencia is a good winger, it would be meaningless to force him to continue to be used such a way. Jose has to put Bailly from day one to get him into the art of defending. We need to have one experienced defender additionally, in the case of injury to smalling. Luke Shaw has shown glimpses of his brilliance. But in Jose’s language, he has to prove himself. Younger defenders who have played some matches last season have to mature to certain level before being put into business. We need speed with a cool head, if UTD wants to truly tell other teams something.
The truth is dat, man u don’t have leadership at the back….smailling, Jones, Damian, shaw are of the same age. Need defender like Bonucci to bring experience and leadership as the case of vidic, Ferdinand and evra.
