Spanish international Mikel Arteta left Arsenal to join Pep Guardiola’s coaching staff at Manchester City and now the Gunners will have a new captain.
German international Per Mertesacker is expected to get the arm-band (The Sun). The veteran center back mainly captained the Gunners last season while Arteta mostly warmed the bench and had injury concerns as well.
In the second half of the last campaign, the 31-year-old defender was replaced by Gabriel in the starting XI.
It will not come as any surprise if Mertesacker warms the bench next season. Therefore, the former Werder Bremen defender should not get the captaincy and Wenger must select someone who will mostly be in the starting lineup for the Gunners.
As per the provided Sun link, Arsenal were close to giving Laurent Koscielny the captaincy. Moreover new £30million summer signing Granit Xhaka and Czech goalie Petr Cech were also considered for the role.
In your opinion, who should be Arsenal’s next captain?
