Since the departure of Robin van Persie from Arsenal, no striker has been able to score over 20 league goals in a season for the Gunners.
Giroud has proved to be the most effective but still the French international is by no means world class.
Everyone attached with Arsenal is well aware of the fact that the Gunners cannot seriously challenge for the title if they fail to secure a quality goal scorer this summer.
Arsenal director Lord Harris perhaps feels the same and has provided the best possible news for fans by claiming that the club can break transfer record to sign a top striker this summer.
“On the list is a centre forward, but I’m not going to tell you who he is. I think he wants to come.”
“It basically comes down to whether the other team can find a superstar to replace him. We could go into the market and probably buy any player in the world, apart from half a dozen who are unbuyable.”
“At the moment there are no plans to sign anyone, unless he finds a real superstar like Mesut Ozil or Alexis Sanchez. He’s looking for one of those but there aren’t many available.”
“We would back him to break the club’s transfer record. Apart from Messi and Ronaldo, he could have any player. We will probably have to break the club record to get the man he wants.”
For now, Mesut Ozil remains Arsenals record signing. Wenger secured the German international from Real Madrid two seasons ago.
It remains to be seen whether Arsenal will actually break their transfer record to secure a top striker. Someone like Karim Benzema will largely improve the strike-force. Arsenal must splash the cash to secure the Les Bleus star.
