The Red Devils were well short of quality midfielders last season and that was one of the main reasons why they failed big time under Moyes.
This summer under Louis van Gaal, Manchester United failed to lure many midfield transfer targets with two of the best around in Kroos and Vidal.
In the end, Untied lured Spanish international Ander Herrera who has shown quality but has not been able to cope with the physicality of the premier league thus far. The former Athletic Bilbao star is sidelined with injury for the second time since joining the Devils in summer.
Even after a long summer, Van Gaal will have to work on deals even in winter to solve the midfield dilemma once and for all but signing top stars in mid-season is by all means difficult.
However, there is one big common concern with the midfielders Manchester United have targeted i.e. Injury problems.
United cannot afford to sign stars who are injury prone as such signing will not benefit the team one bit.
Van Gaal wants Kevin Strootman, the Dutch international who has not played a single game for Roma since last March because of cruciate ligament injury. He constantly remains linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Once again, Ilkay Gundogan is wanted by Manchester United. The German international could onlly play 50 odd minutes of the first league game for Dortmund last season and since then is on the sidelines because of spinal compression.
The above mentioned duo are set to return soon and it remains to be seen how they perform.
Lastly, Arturo Vidal, the Chilean who had injury concerns before, during and after the World Cup. Moreover, he has missed two games for Juventus this season because of muscle injury as well.
