Last summer, Liverpool focused on signing defensive players as they lured defenders like Sakho, Toure, Ilori, Cissokho and goalie as well in Mignolet.
Even after signing that many players, defensive issues were not resolved. Reds scored record goals but conceded no less than 50 goals as well.
With the departure of Luis Suarez, surely Brendan Rodgers had to reinforce attack and up till now he has signed more than a few attacking players. May sign more.
However, hopefully this time BR can end the Liverpool’s defensive headache once and for all and perhaps the major role will be played by fullbacks.
The merseysiders have completed the signings of Lovren, Can (likely to play DM/CM,) Manquillo and are also expected to seal the deal for Sevilla left back Moreno.
Under Rafael Benitez, Liverpool always had a solid defensive setup until his last year when Johnson arrived. The versatile English international has been effective in attack but no one can remember the last time he was solid at the back.
Since Benitez left, Liverpool have never conceded under 30 goals in the league. Apart from his first season, with Riise, Arbelo and Finnan, the max Liverpool conceded under Benitez was 28 goals in a PL season.
When Rafa replaced Arbeloa with Johnson, Liverpool conceded 35 goals in 2009-10. In came Roy Hodgson and brought the worst of fullbacks in Konchesky and Reds conceded 44 goals in 2010-2011.
Reds always had decent central defenders, even now, but are yet to find the right partnership as solid as Carragher and Hyypia.
However the fullbacks have just not been good enough and the fans hope that young Moreno and Manquilo sort that out for a better future.
