Liverpool have played some of the best football in this season’s premier league against the best of oppositions.
However, their lack of quality depth as compared to Chelsea and Mourinho’s tactics inevitably mastered Brendan Rodgers and his Liverpool side.
Reds, without European Football, seemed too tired for the hectic schedule as Brendan only made one change in the team that started against City on boxing day.
Agger came in for Cissokho in an unlikely left back role and flopped big time. Rest, majority of the Liverpool players were off the pace including the talisman Luis Suarez.
Mourinho made four changes in the side that started against Swansea and inevitably were fitter than Liverpool.
His tactics undone Reds flowing passing football as Chelsea completely dominated the midfield battle in the first half to take the lead despite going a goal down from set piece.
Hazard and Oscar constantly troubled Liverpool’s midfield and defense.
In the second half, the visitors’ best chance came from another set-piece as Sakho hit the cross bar. Other than that, Liverpool did not threaten Chelsea much as their batteries were draining.
Apart from defeat, the merseysiders dealt with further injury blows as Allen was replaced by debutant Smith and later on Sakho was off for Toure.
Reds were on top of the league on Christmas day, but will start the new year at 5th place. Such is the level of competition at the top this season.
Liverpool will hope to bounce back against Hull on 1st January and get back to winning ways.
