Chelsea star Juan Mata was given a rare start by manager Jose Mourinho against Swindon but it will be fair to say that the Spaniard was not really impressive.
He did well in the first half, but his influence faded away in the second half. Nevertheless, Mata was satisfied with his performance and believes that his hard work and versatility can help him earn more playing time.
Mata claimed:
“I’ve played in three positions. In the beginning I was playing as a left winger, then on the right and last season as a No.10. I feel comfortable playing in any offensive position. “
Yes, he is a versatile player and one with top quality but his claims of versatility really does not matter in the eyes of Jose Mourinho.
Adding to that, as far as Chelsea football club is concerned, they have got more than a few quality attacking midfielders in the squad and surely Mourinho can rotate them in different positions.
Mata is not the only versatile player, Hazard, Schurrle who are mainly preferred by Jose can play on the wings, behind the striker and the German can even play as a striker.
Few points that have been argued about Mata is that he does not have the habit of running back to help in the defense, nor has as much pace as compared to Schurrle and Hazard to amplify Mourinho’s counter attacking football.
Moreover, Oscar is currently their best player playing behind the striker and will always start if fit.
There is no doubt that Mata is a top class player and his treatment seems baffling but Mourinho just does not think he is perfect fit for his system and none can blame him.
