Although Arsenal already have quality midfield at their disposal, Arsene Wenger is still looking to further increase depth in that department. Reports suggest that Arsenal are favorites to sign England midfielder Gareth Barry.
The Manchester City player is currently on his final year of the contract earning 100k a week. However, Barry is well aware of the fact that after the arrival of new players like Jesus Navas and specifically Fernandinho, his starting position is in doubt. That will inevitably damage his chances of playing in the World Cup.
According to Daily Star, gunners are in pole position to land the English international for a reported price of 4 million pounds. The former Villa player plays as a deep lying passer and has been playing regularly for City as well as England.
However, the arrival of new manager Manuel Pellegrini from Malaga may change things for him and Barry is worried that he might be provided with a bench role next season.
Spurs and Hammers are also keen to sign the player from City but Arsenal for now are considered favorites as they will be playing with the very best in the Champions League next season. Barry will likely prefer that option than to play in Europa League with Spurs.
Arsenal are not really renowned for signing veterans and at 32, if Barry arrives, he is reportedly going to get one year contract at Emirates earning around 75k a week. The contract may be extended based on his performances with the club.
Gunners already have versatile center midfielders like Ramsey, Wilshere and Arteta but Star again suggests that Barry will be an intergral part of Arsene Wenger’s plan.
For now, it is highly likely that Barry is going to quit Manchester City this summer in search of first team football that can possibly guarantee him the World Cup place. Barry is neither Arsenal’s priority in the transfer market nor does that will really excite fans but surely he will be more than a decent addition to the side.
