The Reds have been linked with Ajax’s Toby Alderweireld, a versatile talent who feels that Liverpool meet his criteria and he may as well look to join the merseysiders next season. For now, the defender prefers premier league as his next destination and perhaps Liverpool lead the race to sign Ajax star.
Toby won the Eredivisie title with Ajax last season, on the other hand Liverpool finished 7th in the premier league. Even then, the Belgian defender sees Liverpool as one of his ideal destinations. According to Express, Back in April, the midfielder claimed:
“I do not want to play in an English club to mid-table. Unlike Newcastle, Liverpool meets my criteria.”
Ajax will be featuring in the world’s best club competition next season, whereas Liverpool have failed to qualify for the Champions league for the past four seasons. Even then, the reds are capable of attracting top quality stars.
One of the main reasons why Liverpool are always linked with quality starlets is that they are one of the biggest clubs in the world (goes without saying). Even though, they are not playing Champions League football, the history and prestige attached with the club attracts quality players.
His own statement about Liverpool and the one lately about coming to premier league is something that will not go unnoticed at Anfield and may mean that Reds lead the race for Belgian who has been a very consistent player. Alderweireld played 45 games for Ajax last season and scored 4 goals as well.
Reds will be without legendary defender Jamie Carragher next season as the veteran retired after the end of last campaign. Despite signing a short term solution in Kolo Toure, Alderweireld surely knows this fact that the merseysiders are looking at options to replace Carra and he can be the perfect solution for the reds.
Adding to that, the Belgian international is looking for a team that suits his playing style and Liverpool are perhaps perfect in that case. Toby is renowned for his physical strength that Liverpool badly need in their defensive set up, and quality passing that suits Rodgers style. Moreover, he can move into the midfield with ease as well.
The likes of Vermaelen and Vertonghen left Ajax for premier league and have impressed with Arsenal and Spurs. No point being superstitious but LFC fans can hope for the same with Toby who has all the traits to be a success in England.
Reds are linked with several central defenders as they look to bolster their defense. However, they should jump onto the opportunity of signing the talented Toby Alderweireld before other top clubs step in to compete with them for his signature. More importantly, he meets FSG’s transfer policy as well, young 24 year old, and by no means expensive as the reported 8 million will be a bargain for Ajax star.
