French side Monaco have confirmed the signing of Atletico striker Radamel Falcao and the Spanish club will soon be looking to land a top quality replacement. Over the years Atletico have had world class strikers at disposal, they did not last for long but the club always replaced them with quality.
Top stars such as the likes of Torres, Forlan, Aguero have played for the club, left and were replaced by equally brilliant strikers. Somehow they have always been able to sign top quality players despite not featuring in the Champions League regularly.
Chelsea’s Fernando Torres was a product of Atletico’s academy who soon became their main man and was handed the captaincy at the age of 19. Having failed to qualify for Europe in 2007, Torres departed for Liverpool and became one of the best strikers in the world.
Although Torres had young Aguero alongside during his last season at Calderon but the Argentine announced himself after El Nino’s departure and soon started scoring goals for fun. Aguero formed a terrific partnership with Torres’s replacement Forlan who went onto win European Golden shoe with the club.
Forlan departed for cheap being a veteran, while Aguero left for the riches of Manchester City having scored over 100 goals for the club. The little Argentine was then replaced by the Colombian hitman Radamel Falcao who is arguably the best striker in the world right now. Now that he is also gone, who will be next Atletico star?
Not to forget, Atletico will be playing in Europe’s elite competition next season and can easily attract top quality stars. Adding to that, the 60 odd million earned from Falcao’s sale are surely going to help in reinforcing the squad for next season and signing a world class striker.
Last month, Atletico showed keen interest in signing Galatasaray’s forward Burak Yilmaz who had a brilliant season for the Turkish side having scored more than 30 goals. Above all 8 goals in 9 champions league appearances is a remarkable achievement and shows his quality.
Adding to that, few weeks back, the club were also linked with a move for Liverpool star striker Luis Suarez. Although controversial but the Uruguayan has all the quality in the world to replace someone like Falcao. Suarez scored 30 goals and provided numerous assists for the reds last season. Lately he has been heavily linked with Atletico’s rivals Real Madrid.
Diego Simeone’s main priority in this summer’s transfer season will be to find a perfect replacement for Falcao, the options are there but who will/should that star be. Have your say:
