Should Liverpool Retire No. 23 Shirt?

Should Liverpool Retire No. 23 Shirt?Much has been discussed by Liverpool fans on this aspect that should Liverpool retire number 23 shirt for Jamie Carragher who played his last game for the Anfield side yesterday.
The legendary defender ended his playing career with a victory as he captained the side that defeated relegated Queens Park Rangers 1-0 on the final day of the season. It was emotional for him, for the fans and everyone attached to LFC. I have summarized opinions of the supporters relating to mentioned subject.

Retire Number 23

Having served the club for all his professional career, 17 long years, played more than 700 games, only Callaghan has more and won top honors with the club, Carragher is without doubt one of the best players to wear the red shirt.
Although, Carra took over number 23 from none other than Robbie Fowler, still the defender turned it into a legendary one. The leadership qualities and determination of the highest order from the day he stepped onto the field for the first time to the last day as a 35 year old.
For almost two decades, Carragher has always given more than 100% week in week out for Liverpool Football Club and the man deserves all the praise in the world for his services. The list of his contributions can go on and on and the idea of retiring the number for him is not a bad thought either.

Against Retiring Number 23 Shirt

Although number 23 is perhaps only a famous number as far as Liverpool are concerned still retiring the shirt for Carragher will set an example. Liverpool are a club with rich history and have legends in every era but none had his shirt retired.
Kenny Dalglish, widely regarded as the best player in the history of the club wore number 7 shirt that is today worn by none other than the current best Liverpool player Luis Suarez.
One may say Dalglish did not play all his career for the reds like Carra did but going by that logic when skipper Steven Gerrard decides to hang up his boots, Liverpool should retire his number 8 shirt. (Gerrard wore number 28 and 17 as well while Carragher always had 23).

    Mixed opinions about this
wud want the shirt to be retired but then soon we will have no number available 😉

  2. Earl says:

It’s Liverpool FC and no-one is bigger than the club! So many shirts should be retired if so and we had to play in shirts with 3 digits. Retirement of a shirt is some US sport invention, keep it over there!

    • Haedi says:

Leave the American thing aside. Brazil retired number 10 for Pele
agreed on the point “no player is bigger than the shirt” and so no retirement

  3. George says:

Most definitely, the club must retire the number 23 shirt. No future Liverpool player would want to wear the number 23 shirt and be associated with a frigging tactically-incompetent and technically-inept Jamie Hoofer Carragher.
