Wigan shock Manchester City to win the FA Cup final against all odds. The Latics win their biggest ever trophy in history and the victory ensures that there will be no Manchester derby for community shield match next season. Roberto Martinez has pulled off a miracle much to the delight of Wigan supporters.
City lost the tactical battle despite having immensely strong squad as compared to Wigan side who are struggling to survive in the premier league once again. Although they are nearing relegation in the league but their cup run has been impressive by all means.
The Latics last reached a cup final seven years ago way back in 2006 when Manchester United dismantled them 4-0 in the league cup final at Cardiff. Paul Jewell was then in-charge of that Wigan side.
Manchester City won the FA Cup two years back and perhaps needed the cup real bad this time around after losing their premier league crown to rivals Manchester United. However, a last minute winner from Ben Watson made sure that Manchester City will end their season trophy less.
David Moyes will be more than glad that his first major test will not be against Manchester City as it was expected. Now United will face Wigan for the Community Shield match before the start of the premier league season in August.
Although Wigan have won the FA Cup and qualified for Europe still there is a major possibility that their influential manager will leave the club to join a premier league side next season. Will he be ready to manage Wigan in the championship next season if they go down, highly unlikely?
Martinez may as well replace the departing David Moyes at Everton and that will not be a bad move at all for both. Talking about departing managers then Roberto Mancini is also under immense pressure after losing the cup final and Manuel Pellegrini has been constantly linked with the sky blues lately.
Anyways, Wigan deserved their victory and it is party time for Latics supporters.
Congratulations Wigan Athletic Football Club
