Chelsea continue their search for a top quality striker. After losing out on Radamel Falcao, the Lononders have turned their attention towards El Matador. The blues are favorites to land Cavani but face a familiar obstacle in their departed manager Rafael Benitez.
The former Liverpool boss helped Chelsea win the Europa League, ensured Champions League qualification and left the club to return to Serie A with Napoli. The Italian side finished second in the league last season largely due to the brilliant form of Edinson Cavani.
The Uruguayan has drawn interest from major European clubs such as the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, City and Chelsea as well.
However, Barcelona have signed Neymar, Madrid are heavily linked with Cavani’s compatriot and Liverpool star striker Luis Suarez while City have just ensured that they keep star man Sergio Aguero at the Etihad stadium for long term.
In such a scenario, Chelsea, who are badly in need of a striker who could score 20+ league goals a season, are looking to sign Italian league’s top scorer to push for the premier league title next season.
Cavani has been in top form since he signed for Napoli and he scored no less than 38 goals in just 48 appearances for the Italian side last season. Without doubt he is one of the best out and out strikers in the world right now and will not go for cheap.
A hefty sum of around 45 odd million may as well be a decent bid for Cavani but Napoli’s new manager is in no mood of losing his main asset as he looks to prove himself in Italy after failing with Inter Milan in 2010.
Adding to that Cavani is happy at the club as well and may be handed a deserved new deal to stay put. Napoli are building a great project and with the team being in the Champions League, Cavani does not need really need to move abroad, especially when they have a manager with a fantastic record in Europe.
Nevertheless, a massive offer may as well force Napoli and Benitez to sell as the funds can be utilized to further strengthen the squad with quality players. Whether or not Chelsea will make that mammoth offer to lure the star, we shall see.
