Bayern Level Liverpool’s Record – Robben Finally a Winner

Having lost 2 finals in the last 3 years, Bayern Munich finally win the champions league to level Liverpool’s record of winning the European cup 5 times. This is their first triumph since they last won the coveted prize back in 2001 defeating Spanish side Valencia on penalties.
On the other hand, the man for the final, who always turned out be a villain for his own side when it mattered the most, is finally a champions league winner. Although a brilliant player, but in every final he has featured before yesterday’s Robben has put in no more than average performances.
Robben was perhaps the flop of the game against Chelsea last year where he missed an extra time penalty and Blues went onto win their first ever European Cup. He also bottled many chances in the World Cup final 2010 as well and Spain went onto win their first World Cup.
The Dutchman had to put things right but he started the final against Dortmund in a very similar manner, average at best, missing crucial opportunities in the first half. It seemed that Robben will have one of those nights again but fortunately for Bayern he turned the game around in the second half with his heroics.
The former Chelsea star provided the assist for Mandzukic to open the scoring and then scored a late late winner in the 89th minute of the game with a superb effort to ensure the victory for the German champions.
After losing out on all titles last year, Bayern came back stronger than ever this season, reinforcing the squad heavily and are now arguably the best team in the world. They are likely to complete the treble after winning the German cup as well.
The Germans have won the Bundelisga with a record margin of 25 points and have ripped top teams apart for fun both in Germany and in Europe. 4-0 vs Juventis and the humiliation of Spanish champions Barcelona 7-0 in the semifinals shows how brilliant they have been all round. Bayern deserved it all without doubt.
Heynckes will leave the club with his head held high after winning second Champions league of his career, the first was won with Real Madrid back in 1998.
Pep Guardiola will take charge next season and the scary fact is that Bayern will only get stronger and stronger. Still, their biggest test will be to do it all over again and win the indefensible trophy as since the inception of Champions League no team has ever been able to retain the European Cup.
