Reds Beat Spurs, Win 3 Consecutive PL Games Since May 2011

Liverpool and Tottenham contested in perhaps one of the best and most exciting games of the season. The reds eventually defeated Spurs 3-2 and registered third consecutive league win for the first time since May 2011 when legendary Kenny Dalglish was in charge.
Not only that, Liverpool’s last victory against Tottenham Hotspur came way back in 2010 at Anfield under the management of current Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez. Since then the North Londoners have had an upper hand over the merseysiders.
Liverpool’s eye-catching football has earned a lot of praise during the past few weeks and above all they are in red hot form having scored more goals than any other team in the league since the turn of the year and they were never going to step back at home.
Reds started attacking opposition from the word go and the focal point was once again Luis Suarez who scored his 50th goal for the club and 22nd of the league campaign. The Uruguayan gave Liverpool the lead with a cool finish after brilliant work done by Coutinho and Jose Enrique.
Spurs matched Liverpool as fans witnessed exciting end-to-end football. One negative aspect in Liverpool’s game and the reason for inconsistency this season has been their defense. Failure to deal with crosses, set pieces and losing concentration have cost them many times this season. Perhaps it was the same scenario against Spurs as well.
Liverpool conceded first goal minutes before half time from Bale’s cross and then again minutes into the second half from a set piece as Jan Vertonghen punished not so disciplined Liverpool defense. Minutes later, Spurs could have doubled the lead but goal post helped Liverpool.
Monitoring the situation, manager Brendan Rodgers made perhaps the most significant change of the match. Tottenham were dominating the midfield battle in the second half and Rodgers had to sacrifice Coutinho for Joe Allen to gain control in midfield.
Liverpool supporters were getting louder by the minute as the reds were constantly pushing for the equalizer. The pressure paid off as Downing took advantage of a sloppy back pass from Walker that Lloris failed to clear, and the winger capitalized to make it 2-2.
In the later stages, both teams were determined to get the winning goal and Liverpool eventually got it. A silly tackle from Assou-Ekotto brought down Suarez in the box and captain Gerrard stepped up to slot the ball home.
Whether or not Liverpool can continue their fantasitc form to challenge for top 4 spot is another story as they are still 7 points behind 4th place Chelsea who have a game in hand. However, Arsenal and Chelsea are not far behind Tottenham competing for Champions League places and the defeat at the hands of Liverpool has done them no good.
