Ashley Cole is expected to win his 100th cap for England tonight against Brazil in an international friendly match at Wembley. He is surely the all time great English left back.
If he is selected for the final XI tonight to face Brazil then the Chelsea legend will become only the seventh member of the 100 cap club (Peter Shilton 125, David Beckham 115, Bobby Moore 108, Bobby Charlton 106, Billy Wright 105 and Steven Gerrard 100).
The Liverpool and English captain Steven Gerrard recently mention on a press conference that:
“It’s fantastic for him to get it against Brazil. He’s been a team-mate of mine for a long time so I’m very pleased for him.”
“Ashley’s been consistent in the England team for many many years.”
In a recent interview Ashley Cole backs English young generation. He said “with the young players coming through I think we have a great chance”.
Chelsea and England’s old guard Cole also said “I’m proud to play for England. From being a little boy from the East End, you would never think you’d get a chance to represent your country. I’m proud, privileged and overwhelmed by how many times I’ve played for England. I hope it doesn’t stop here.”
Cole made his English debut in March 2001 against Albania. There were suggestions Cole may lead the English team against Brazil instead Gerrard but England Manager Roy Hodgson ruled out such rumors.
Hodgson said “I don’t see any reason why the captain should let anyone else lead the team out.”
There are fears that Ashley has been the subject of negative headlines for off-field incidents in recent years, and he may not receive the warm welcome that could normally be expected from the crowd on the occasion of winning 100 caps.
