Why Wenger's Time May Have Come, and Two Suitable Successors

Why Wenger's Time May Have Come, and Two Suitable SuccessorsFollowing recent poor displays and defeats this season to Norwich, and Manchester United; and Arsenal’s eight year trophy drought – many Arsenal fans do really believe it is time for Wenger to leave the club with his head held high.
Arsene Wenger is Arsenal’s longest serving manager from 1996 to the present day, but there is reason to believe that his reign should end this season. This is believed by some Arsenal fans for two main reasons.

Outdated Transfer Policy Wenger

Firstly, Wenger’s transfer policy is outdated spending wise; although Wenger is undoubtably one of the best in the world, if not the best, at buying players young and developing them into fine players, he’s not renowned for his big money signings, and this was OK until recent years when the outgoings of world class players began to outweigh the influx of world class players. The Chelsea’s and the Manchester City’s of this world have changed football as we know it – all through the transfer market. Spending big and paying out on high wages thanks to rich businessmen owners has made a path for an ‘easier’ way to gain silverware than developing younger players. Although top clubs do produce good players, and buy young players and develop them; buying big players at their peak is a part of every great football club, even Barcelona. (Who are famous for their fantastic youth system: La Masia.) Most very top clubs have found a balance between buying big, and developing young – and other great managers, such as Sir Alex Ferguson have wised up to the change in football.
Sadly, Wenger does not appear to be one of these managers – he continues to produce outstanding players, and buys good players, but Arsenal fans yearn for a big money star signing like Falcao! In this aspect, Arsenal need change. I’m not saying to scrap the youth system, and pump oil money into the club – as youth is the way forward, but I am saying that to really compete in modern day football, Arsenal need to buy bigger, more expensive players, on higher wages. Because of this, the calls of a new manager for Arsenal are being heard and appreciated by more.

Wenger Tactical Stubbornness

A second reason for change in the Emirates dugout is Wenger’s tactical stubbornness. This links together with his purist football beliefs – that clubs should mainly build their own success, Wenger always sets out his team to play the Arsenal way and win the game as the better team. However, Arsenal don’t have the quality as they did with teams like the Invincibles to go out and win by being the better team sometimes, this showed against teams like Norwich, and QPR, who Arsenal narrowly beat.
Wenger tends to concentrate on his own team, and doesn’t pay attention to the opposite line up. The game against Man Utd is a prime example of this, Ferguson looked at the weaknesses Arsenal had – namely a certain brasilian left-back, and he exploited this by playing Valencia and Rafael on the right. On the contrary, Wenger did nothing to help Andre Santos’ lack of defensive skills, he could’ve merely made Podolski get back more often. Ferguson also saw that the starting point of every Arsenal move was through Arteta,  so he put one of the Premier League’s best players man marking Arteta; Wenger did nothing to stop this either.
Also, the front three Wenger has been playing recently has been unbalanced, playing a centre-forward on the left, and a midfielder on the right, and this also points to tactical stubbornness on Wenger’s part.
Arsene Wenger has been, over the last 16 years, the best thing to happen to Arsenal Football Club. However, 16 years is a long time, and maybe the time has come where he has done all he can do. Whatever happens, Wenger will go down in the history books as being one of the greatest managers of all time, but I think Arsenal need a change in the Managerial department.
The Two Suitable Successors to ‘Le Professeur.’

Jurgen Klopp Borussia Dortmund

The Borussia Dortmund manager has an almost identical philosophy to Arsene Wenger, as he is confident in the youth system, and plays the beautiful game how it should be played. Klopp also tends to play a 4-2-3-1 formation with Dortmund, but not a strict formation. This would bring something new to Arsenal’s team compared to the 4-3-3 used now.
Arsenal now have a few German players in the squad as well, including Mertesacker, Podolski, and Eisfield – a promising young player who came through the ranks at Dortmund. Klopp would be the perfect fit for Arsenal, but he may be a bit too similar to Wenger, and not spend big on players either.
The downside, it is unlikely Klopp would leave Dortmund, who won the German League and Cup last year, and are doing well again this year, for Arsenal. Klopp has also won individual titles with Dortmund, winning German manager of the year in 2011 and 2012, so he may be hard to persuade.

Pep Guardiola For Arsenal

Pep also has a similar philosophy to Wenger and Klopp, but is willing to spend big if need be – see Alexis Sanchez, and although he played a similar formation to what Arsenal play when he managed Barca, it was a free flow formation, and he saw the pitch as relationships between players, rather than a set formation.
Guardiola really would be Arsenal’s ideal partner, but as he’s on most clubs most wanted list, don’t expect him to be in the Arsenal dugout any time soon.

it’s the board, not just Wenger

  2. Trilium says:

When Pep and Klopp are not going to happen as you say then why even short list them
Wenger will be here next season, too upset an Arsenal fan you are

  3. micro says:

Just form or buy a club and hire them, here you have no say in matters of hiring coaches. I know it keeps you busy writing something even if finally it means nothing. In this world there are people who do things and those who write about or criticize what has been done, its always good to know where you belong, because the latter cannot claim to know more than the former.

    • Conund says:

Micro try and justify something with some information instead of a stylo speech that means nothing.

      • micro says:

what dont you understand in that statement? It just means ,no club or company in the world is run from blog postings and bloggers cannot claim to know what the board should do, hence it is posting for the sake of posting. Are we communicating now?

        • Conund says:

Micro , i can understand English, but i guess you didnt get my point.
My point is that, Its better to disagree and come up with a counter arguement than to just slate others saying they are talking crap and know nothing.
Yes we dont sit in Arsenal board, but dont we all watch matches, dont we see whats wrong with the side and have an opinion. If all a football follower/fan has to do is shut up and watch his side play than the game will be hell boring.

The author has missed the point.
Whoever we get as manager could be Jose Mourino or even Ferguson, it doesn’t matter.
The club are being ruined from the inside by board living in past who refuse t spend and owner who refuses to invest.
Only way things could improve would be to get Dein back, Usmonov in and then whoever is in charge would have the support needed to take the club to success.
Until then it doesn’t matter .
You know though that Bould will be appointed. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  5. STEVE. says:

Arsene, walk away while you still can, your well past your sell buy date, let us have a good British manager, one that will stand up to our tight fisted Directors, and not a Yes Man like you. At this moment in time Arsenal, are like a RollsRoyce
motor car,but we carn’t afford the fuel to run it ,we have got a first class stadium, first class training facilities in fact
everything is first class apart from, our manager, and team, and there “RUBBISH “. What we want is a good clear out and start again.

  6. idris mugalu says:

To me i believe the manager demands for the players he wants and what we have now is what wenger needs in his team. i think we should put all the blame to wenger but not the board per say because at one time o nil resigned from villa for selling players. and many managers have done that but for wenger he has never expressed his dissatisfaction to the board when players are leaving a thing which shows that he is involved in selling our best assets, for instance if u say song wasn’t committed why waste arteta’s talent by making him a holding midfielder instead of using songs money to get a committed holding midfielder. then for Gods sake why not try the little rusian for some games, also u lose a prolific goal machine and replace him with some one who hard a one bright season, then loan all people that would have helped complement for instance joel campel, bentner and even park .

  7. BYAMUKAMA WILSON says:

To me the only mistake Wenger made was to loan out Bentiner. He is an average goal scorer and on agood day can be very goog. The likes of Park, squallace, Danellison, and the send goal keeper(Famb) can all the sold off and the money being wasted on them can be used to pay for one quality striker. As for me to feel happy we need to have Falcao and one quality mid fielder to help Arteta. In fact we can sell off Ramsy and buy another quality mid fielder.

  8. Jean Thornton says:

I have been saying for ages that Wenger only seems to have a plan A. I love him to bits and he has been a great manager but I cannot agree about buying. The board have the final decision. I believe we lost out on Lloris because the board would not pay the transfer fee. Not good enough. I do feel that the tactical play does need changing and they need more freedom. I think Pep Guardiola would be good for Arsenal. We do not sit in at boardroom meetings so we cannot comment on what Arsene says but I am sure he has plenty to say. He is very passionate and loves the club. I believe he does want the best for the club.

  9. Tito says:

The only language the board understands is when numbers in the stadium reduce…reduced sales….
And personally i believe thats the only way Wenger will leave Arsenal. Now i dont buy tickets, i therefore urge those that buy to stop going there for only 3 consecutive matches…….I DONT HATE WENGER, BUT SOMETIMES ITS BEST TO LEAVE WHEN THINGS ARE NOT HAPPENING…..ON A GUD NOTE…

  10. Lakey says:

Arsene Wenger has simply lost it. He needs to the go. This level of mediocrity in terms of performance from the team should no longer be tolorated. The board members simply lack ambition and are only interested in sharing profits at the expense of the club. Moreover, Ivan Gazidis or whatever is simply clueless.
Arsenal are no longer a force to reckon with in England and Europe. Its high time we started boycotting matches. The managment of the club need to feel a drastic decline in sales/revenue otherwise they won’t act. They are simply a bunch of jokers.

  11. sube says:

Who will sack Arsene? Arsene is making good money for the board and the club. I don’t think they will sack him.
He will stay until the end of his contract.
We have heard of such “Sack” Arsene talks many times in the past 7 years. This is neither the first not the last time we are hearing this.

  12. mark says:

He may be unproven as yet ( as was Arsene when he first came to Arsenal ) but my man for the job has to be Dennis Bergkamp. Has the same outlook as Wenger on how football should be played, but when playing new how to dig in and fight! I’m sure his reputation would also attract the big players. He has Arsenal in his blood and seems to be doing a good job with de Boer at Ajax just now.

  13. Bob says:

Money is the key here. As long as the club is making sufficient revenue to pay off the loans, pay the bills, pay the salaries with enough money left over to satisfy the shareholders, things will not change much. The club will only spend more money for more return and if the stadium sells out every week as is, then why spend more? Silverware does not increase revenue directly!

  14. franco says:

i read thru all these “feeling” to say from truly arsenal fans who have the club ay heart.. its a pity for sure from my home back in uganda around the 2005 every football fan(manutd n liverpool n arsenal)loved to watch the team play. they payed for the entertainement in so doing they began to love the club 2nd to their utd and pool. looking at what is happening at the club right now seems like a curse… if it was africa the spiritual leaders would be summoned to find the problem… back to arsenal, this is a business making profit, what more would you want if u were the owner who gives no shit abt football. my advice… i respect van persie for the hard decision he made… at his age. lets all emulate him and choose wisely if it hurts seeing arsenal run this way. otherwise keep ur cool and stay healthy n dont create history(heart attacks).
