If there were any doubts that British record signing Andy Carroll was never in Rodgers’s plans, he has blown it away coming up with statements that may suggest end to his Liverpool career.
Rodgers strongly believes in his own methods playing quick passing 4-3-3, he is one of a kind who is overly confident about the system and does not change it. Something that can perhaps be understood by those who have witnessed “Being Liverpool”
In Rodgers’s system, as it seems at least, there is no place for direct football, something that Andy Carroll thrives on. Play to his strengths and he is one of the most dangerous strikers but that is not the case at Liverpool, where the setup is not built around the main striker. On the other hand Carroll thinks he is fit for every system and also claims that Rodgers thinks otherwise.
“I think I could fit into every system. I believe in what I can do. Obviously he [Rodgers] has his beliefs and he didn’t think that.
But for me, obviously, it was better to move on instead of waiting for my chance – which he told me might not come.”
Carroll believes he never got a fair chance at Liverpool, he might be right to some extent but it is not as if he did not get chances or regular run of games. Not to forget Suarez was banned for a considerable period but Carroll did not come good and the reds suffered. He did shine at the very end of the season but his stats are perhaps not good enough for a record breaking 35 million signing. Eventually he failed over 18 months and so did his manager, Kenny Dalglish who had to depart.
Adding to that, even the man who signed him, Dalglish preferred pass and move system and Carroll was mainly part of his plan B then one can easily understand Rodgers’s decision to doubt his abilities for his tiki taka system and not include him in his plan A. Carroll has other ideas:
“I know what I can do and the ability I have got. I know what I am capable of. If other people don’t believe it, that is fine. I just get on with it. But at the end of the day, I know what I can do.”
Liverpool are short of strikers and surely if Rodgers’s knew the club would sign no one on the deadline day then Carroll might have been part of the squad. However, the manager’s new system has finally started to pay dividends and if things work well, it is highly unlikely that Carroll will be re-called.
Moreover, come January, Rodgers will have a full month instead of a single day to sign a new striker which further decreases the chances of Carroll returning to Anfield. Lastly even if he returns, his main demand is regular football, that again is highly unlikely so all points direct towards one conclusion that his time at Liverpool Football Club might just be up.
