Villa Fans Must Not Get Carried Away With City Triumph

Aston Villa manager, Paul Lambert, says that his team fully deserved to progress to the next stage of the Capital One Cup after knocking out Manchester City.
The Premier League Champions were on the wrong end of a 4-2 score-line after goals from Charles N’Zogbia and Gabby Agbonlahor sealed the win for the West Midlands outfit in extra time.
The victory marks a remarkable turnaround for a Villa side that have been on a poor run of football results and were well beaten at the weekend by newly promoted Southampton at St Mary’s, and fans will be hoping that such a win will kick-start the Lions stuttering start to the season.
Lambert was encouraged by Villa’s display at the Etihad Stadium and believes that a good cup run could spark an upturn in fortunes in the League:

“I thought we were excellent, right from the off,” he said.
“There’s no point in being in something if you don’t want to go and win it. We’ll do our best to keep progressing and doing well in the league, that’s ultimately what you want to do.”

Although Aston Villa deserve immense credit for claiming a result at a place that is notoriously hard to go to, many Villa supporters will be quick to keep their feet on the ground.
It is clear that Lambert has continued to show faith in his policy of recruiting young, hungry talent – a strategy that served him so well in three incredible years at Norwich City, and such a transition will take time.
For too long, the Villans have tended to buy journey man Premier League professionals that have nothing left to prove so to see Lambert turning to players from the likes of Sheffield United, Crewe Alexandra and Chesterfield will be a concept that is alien to many regulars at Villa Park.
However, such players possess endless enthusiasm and willingness to play for the shirt and although Villa could be on the end of some real hidings this season due to their lack of experience at this level; such a policy should hold them in good stead in the long run.
It’s vital that fans remain patient and try to buy into what Lambert is trying to achieve at Villa Park. This may be a very tough season, but the good times could be just around the corner.
