Cristiano Ronaldo entered the European Championships with high hopes of leading his nation to new level and making a strong case of winning the Ballon D’Or title. However the tournament thus far has been no less than a nightmare for the Portugese captain. It all started off with an average performance against the German side where Ronaldo was frustrated all night. On the very same day, Lionel Messi did wonders for his nation, scoring a flawless hat-rick against rivals Brazil.
Portugal expected Ronaldo to bounce back in the second fixture and replicate his club form that made him score 59 goals last season for Real Madrid. Instead, things went from bad to worse against Denmark. Ronaldo squandered two golden chances particularly the one where he had all the time in the world to score with only keeper to beat. Chances like these are banged in the net without hesitation when he plays for Madrid and to see him shooting well wide was amusing.
Ronaldo could not hide that his ego was badly hurt in the fixture versus Denmark. Shouted at his team mates in frustration and showed his anger whenever he lost the ball. Above all, when substitute Varela turned out to be the unlikely hero for Portugal scoring late winning goal, Ronaldo was lost somewhere thinking about his poor performance and did not celebrate with his team mates.
Adding insult to injury, the Danish fans started screaming the name that perhaps baffles Ronaldo. Loud shouts of “Messi, Messi” added to his torture and the Madrid star by a clear mile ended the game as the flop of the day. Ronaldo could have kept quiet to ignore all the fuss but instead he reacted to make sure everyone is aware of the fact that comparisons with his archrival seriously gets to him.
“This time last year Messi had been eliminated from the Copa America and was playing at home. That’s worse, isn’t it?”
Messi had a gem of season as well scoring no less than 73 times in all competitions in just 60 appearances breaking records along. With both Barcelona and Madrid crashing out of Champions league semis, the only difference is that Ronaldo won the big prize Spanish League and Messi won Copa Del Rey.
Although Portugal won 3 vital points in the second game but for Ronaldo to come up with such a statement knowing that his nation has not yet guaranteed a spot in the quarterfinals did not make much sense. Portugal have a tough task against Netherlands tonight who can still qualify if they win by 2 goals margin provided Germany beat Denmark. If that happens, Ronaldo could well be eating his words which is what Argentine press are waiting for who described Messi as “Cristiano’s obsession”.
Another horror performance tonight from the captain may as well damage his chances of winning Ballond D’Or title. Having said that, Ronaldo is without a doubt an exceptional talent but whether his obsession and ego will affect him and his national side yet again. Only time will tell.
