Paris Saint-Germain is to get back to action in Ligue 1 again with its match against FC Lorient on Wednesday, after its 2-0 victory over AS Saint-Etienne on January 31st. Currently, the club occupies the first position in Ligue 1 table.
An eventual win over their opponents on February 3rd will enlarge the gap between the current leaders and the runner-ups AS Monaco to 24 points clear. It will also extend the winning streak of 13 games to even more impressive number across all competitions.
FC Lorient is now 12th in Ligue 1 ranking. The club, however, have managed to match the form of the French champions, who have been seriously troubled even as hosts over the years, as they have only five wins from a total of 13 matches against Lorient. Still, Paris Saint-Germain have won their last two matches against FC Lorient in Paris, after they failed to come out victorious from any of the pair’s four encounters before that.
Edinson Cavani has proved himself as one of the most talented players of Paris Saint-Germain. On various occasions, the 28-year-old forward, who is also an Uruguayan international, have demonstrated that he enjoys playing against the team of FC Lorient. He has even three goals in a total of four appearances against them.
Unfortunately, there have been some rumours that the player could be left on the substitutes’ bench over his side’s Wednesday game. This does not seem as a coincidence any more, as Cavani has not been part of manager Blanc’s starting eleven since the beginning of 2016. At first, the striker’s move to the bench was taken as a surprise, but it has progressively turned into a longer stay that does not seem to be ending any time soon.
It was exactly Cavani who assisted the late second goal of Zlatan Ibrahimovic in Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-0 victory at AS Saint-Etienne on January 31st. However, the forward was not provided with the chance to show more of his skills, as he was present on the field for 17 minutes only.
Still, it is not such a problem that Cavani was unable to make a big impression in the last PSG’s match. The bigger issue is the fact that when provided with the opportunity to lead the line over the three domestic cup matches of his side since the beginning of 2016, the striker has failed in all three of them.
The truth is that Cavani is the second-highest scorer in Paris Saint-Germain over the current season. Unfortunately, he has not found the back of the bet in a club’s Ligue 1 match since the 5-1 victory of The Parisiens over Olympique Lyonnais on December 13th. The fact that he has entered in six games without scoring a goal is unthinkable for a high-class player such as himself.
In addition, the Laurent Blanc’s men have undoubtedly been looking better up to date, with Angel Di Maria and Lucas Moura in their starting eleven instead of Cavani.
