Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, who plays for Roma on loan from Arsenal, announced he is to make a decision on his future after Euro 2016 comes to an end.
The 25-year old Szczesny made his professional début on September 22nd, 2009 in a game between Arsenal and West Bromwich Albion. In July, this year, Arsenal loaned him to Roma till the end of the season. He was selected by Giallorossi’s coach, Rudi Garcia, in an attempt to improve the team’s performance after their 1-0 defeat to Inter Milan.
Szczesny made his Serie A début this past August and is expected to remain in Rome until next summer. He has yet to decide the future course his career will take. Recently, fans of the Italian team were greatly disappointed, when Szczesny expressed his desire to return to Arsenal. In a recent interview with Sky Sport Italia, the keeper shared the English team is like a family to him and he will be more than happy to return, if asked.
Last Thursday, while at Poland’s training camp, Szczesny, once again expressed his wish to make a return to the Gunners, although he did not specifically state he plans to leave Italy altogether. He is expected to come to his final decision, once the European Championship comes to a close, sometime in the summer of 2016.
At the present moment, however, the goalkeeper has more pressing matters on his mind. His main focus is on improving his performance for the Italian team, after he failed to prevent Inter Milan’s Gary Medel from scoring a crucial goal.
Nevertheless, the Polish admits playing for Roma was the right decision to make. As he himself puts it, it’s better to be in Roma’s starting line-up, than sitting at the bench in England.
Giallorossi’s sports director, Walter Sabatini, is not yet sure whether or not, the Italians will be able to retain Szczesny. According to Sabatini, it all depends on Arsene Wenger’s decision. Wenger has been managing Arsenal since 1996 and might play a great role in Szczesny’s final decision.
Meanwhile, Wenger hints Roma has already found a replacement for Szczesny, if the latter decides to part with the Italian team next summer. The name of the player, who is to replace the Polish keeper, remains unknown at the moment. Internacional’s Alisson is rumoured to be Szczesny’s replacement, although Roma hasn’t confirmed any of the rumours. Simone Scuffet, the 19-year old keeper of Serie B’s Como, is said to be the other possible replacement for Szczesny.
