Fergie’s last game at Old Trafford could not have ended in a better way for him, supporters and everyone attached to Manchester United. The Red Devils defeated Swansea 2-1 in a manner that perhaps indicates the victory was written in the stars for Alex Ferguson.
How many times have we seen United winning when they are not playing at their best. How many times have we seen United winning thanks to a late late goal. It was not quite Fergie time but another late goal ensured that Ferguson’s last home game ended in style.
Ferguson has instilled that winning mentality in his team that enables them to fight back and win games even when they are not at the top.
Michael Laudrup’s men matched Manchester United and were determined to beat the home side on their legendary manager’s last game at OT. Hernandez opener was cancelled out by Swans star man Michu.
The visitors almost took the lead on more than one occasion but crucial blocks from United’s defense and saves from De Gea rescued the home side. Fair to say it was always going to be their day given the occasion and things went as if they were according to a script.
Manchester United upped their pressure in the later stages of the game and it eventually paid off. The visitors failed to deal with a corner and Ferdinand, the most unlikely of sources for goals was presented the ball near far post who made no mistake and almost burst the net with a thunderous volley to take the lead.
Not to forget, that was Rio Ferdinand’s first goal for United after no less than 187 games and what better occasion to score as he becomes the last man to net for Ferguson’s side at the theater of dreams.
A huge roar followed the full time whistle and Ferguson gave his goodbye speech that included perhaps one of the most significant messages for fans; i.e. everyone stood by him during his 26 years tenure and now the supporters’ job is to stand by the next manager.
United lifted their record 20th title in front of the Old Trafford faithful to give Ferguson the most perfect farewell.
